Total Energy and Force Methods smr Room: Gebauer Local Organiser Secretary: Total Energy and Force Methods, January , Students and young postdocs with a proven experience in standard DFT computations may participate in this tutorial.
The Tutorial is open only for participants of the Workshop. In particular, exact analytic expression related to the eigenvalue and singular value distributions for the product of an arbitrary number of independent rectangular Gaussian random matrices are derived in the limit of large matrix dimensions.
The eigenvalue density is obtained by means of a planar diagrammatic technique, which will be outlined in great detail throughout the talk, while the singular value density is derived in the framework of Free Probability, the extension of ordinary probability theory to noncommuting objects.
Both distributions are shown to display a powerlaw behavior at zero. A heuristic form for finite size corrections to these expressions which very well approximates the distributions for matrices of finite dimensions is proposed. All results are compared to empirical spectra, finding an excellent overall agreement between theory and data.
Also, some possible applications to information theory and to problems of multivariate statistics are discussed. Experts' Meeting on "New online resources to foster Physics and Mathematics education in the developing world" smr Organizer s: The summary of the seminar will be available at: Applied Physics Measurement of stimulated Hawking emission in an analogue system Address: These models are further generalized to two dimensions.
We shall also briefly discuss the relation with the Fractional Quantum Hall wave functions allowing for topological quantum computation. The case of a planar polygonal linkage will be considered in some detail. It will be shown that the critical points of the oriented area are given by the cyclic configurations and the critical values can be calculated using formulae of HeronBrahmagupta type.
Similar issues will be addressed in the case of Coulomb potential. Possible generalizations of these results for tensegrity linkages will be also outlined. Mathematics Extremal problems on configuration spaces of linkages Address: The interactions between the atoms can be controlled at will thanks to a broad magnetic Feshbach resonance [1]. The disorder is introduced into the system by means of a quasiperiodic lattice generated by superimposing two laser standing waves with incommensurate wavelengths.
We study two different regimes. First, the interactions between the particles are tuned to zero. This "ideal" gas in the bichromatic lattice reproduces the AubryAndré hamiltonian [2], which shows a transition between extended and exponentially localized singleparticle wavefunction, similar to the Anderson model [3].
We have directly observed the onset of localization by probing the momentum distribution and the absence of diffusion of the noninteracting condensate [4]. In a second experiment, we reintroduce some repulsive interactions into the sample [5]. In particular, we investigate the interplay between disorder and interactions.
We observe the transition from incoherent Anderson localized states to fully coherent extended states. For large interactions the effect of the disorder is highly reduced and the system enters the BEC regime. The characterization of this superfluid to insulator transition SIT is particularly important.
Infact, despite it is present in many different physical systems such as, for example, helium in porous media [6] and high TC superconductors [7], its complete understanding is still missing. We also study the diffusion of the coherent matter wave through the disordered lattice [8]. In case of the non interacting system, diffusion is absent, since the condensate wavefunction is fully localized. When repulsive interactions are added, we instead observe a slow expansion with subdiffusive behavior.
Our investigations allow to get an insight on the interdisciplinary field of diffusion in disordered potentials in presence of nonlinearity. Avishai, Nature , Let X be a C1 planar vector field whose derivative DX p is Hurwitz for almost all point p in the plane. Then the singularity set of X, Sing X , is either an emptyset, a onepoint set or a nondiscrete set. This generalises BGAS to the case in which the vector field is not necessarily a local diffeomorphism.
Joint work with Roland Rabanal. To illustrate, we consider an example and find that for an XX spin chain, the presence of an energy current increases the region of entanglement detected by the steady state witness. Further, we find that entanglement exists even at a high steady state temperature.
We also discuss concurrence in the steady state system and find that the amount of entanglement can be increased by the current. I will also compare our results to recent works by M. Based on numerical studies, we study both skyrmions and neutral excitations. Skyrmions are found to be present at low enough fields, and are promoted by disorder [1]. The neutral fermion mode is found to have two distinct minima, resulting in a doublepeak structure in the PL spectrum [2].
On the other hand, a valence hole in proximity to the 2DEG induces a disorder potential that locally favours skyrmions. Thus PL signals as a probe for spin polarization in the groundstate should be interpreted conservatively. This allows to induce various intriguing quantum phenomena due to strong interparticle correlations. In this talk we review some recent quantum Monte Carlo studies of Fermi gases with resonant interparticle interactions. We discuss the properties of the superfluid phase and of the exotic normal phase which can be stabilized at zero temperature by imposing an imbalance between the spin components.
For bosonic systems in optical lattices, we investigate the superfluid to insulator transition by using a novel continuousspace quantum Monte Carlo technique.
We address the regimes of strong interparticle interactions and weak or intermediate optical potentials, thus extending previous theoretical studies based on discrete lattice models. In one dimension interactions usually lead to a radically new type of physics, very different from the one we know for higher dimensional systems.
I will present the main concepts underlying this physics, known as Luttinger liquids, and show the various realizations of such systems that recent progress in material science, nanotechnology and cold atomic physics have provided. I will discuss where the field is standing now, and what are today's challenges, such as going beyond the Luttinger liquid concept.
Magnetic field and temperature allow an excellent control on the density of excitations and various very efficient probes such as neutrons and NMR are available. They can thus be used as "quantum simulators'' to tackle with great success questions that one would normally search in itinerant interacting quantum systems. In particular they have provided excellent realizations of BoseEinstein condensates. This allowed not only to probe the properties of interacting bosons in a variety of dimensions but also to study in a controlled way additional effects such as disorder.
If the dimensionality is reduced they also allow to test in a quantitative way Luttinger liquid physics. I will discuss these various cases, and show that we have now good theoretical tools to make quantitative comparisons with the experiments. The density of defects after the sweep can be conveniently described by the KibbleZurek mechanism. In particular, the number of kinks in the zigzag ordering can be derived from a timedependent GinzburgLandau equation for the order parameter, here the zigzag transverse size, under the assumption that the ions are continuously laser cooled.
In a linear Paul trap the transition becomes inhomogeneous, the charge density being larger in the center and more rarefied at the edges. During the linear quench the mechanical instability is first crossed in the center of the chain, and a front, at which the mechanical instability is crossed during the quench, is identified which propagates along the chain from the center to the edges.
If the velocity of this front is smaller than the sound velocity, the dynamics becomes adiabatic even in the thermodynamic limit and no defect is produced. Otherwise, the nucleation of kinks is reduced with respect to the case in which the charges are homogeneously distributed, leading to a new scaling of the density of kinks with the quenching rate.
The analytical predictions are verified numerically by integrating the Langevin equations of motion of the ions, in presence of a timedependent transverse confinement. We argue that the nonequilibrium dynamics of an ion chain in a Paul trap constitutes an ideal scenario to test the inhomogeneous extension of the KibbleZurek mechanism, which lacks experimental evidence to date.
Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics Special seminar: The inhomogeneous KibbleZurek mechanism" Address: We investigate the stochastic equation for the motion of a second grade fluid filling a bounded or periodic domain of R2. Global existence of probabilistic weak solutions and weak in the sense of partial differential equations is expounded.
We are also able to prove the pathwise uniqueness of solution. The two results yield the unique existence of probabilistic strong solution. Mathematics Some mathematical problems in the dynamics of stochastic secondgrade fluids Address: Predicting its behaviour at genomescale an issue with many important practical implications requires the computation of nonequilibrium steady states for reaction fluxes that integrate basic regulatory, stoichiometric and thermodynamic constraints.
The latter point is particularly delicate for a number of reasons. We describe the problem and some recent advances in the field that make use of both topological and dynamical aspects to reconstruct the intracellular free energy landscape, and hopefully improve the predictive ability of existing schemes. Applied Physics Laser Spectroscopy for analytical and clinical applications Address: Contrary to its manifestation in conventional 2D electron systems, such as in semiconductor heterostructures, the graphene quantum Hall effect reflects the "ultrarelativistic" character of the underlying carriers, via a particular sequence of plateaus in the transverse Hall resistance.
A natural question arises from this discovery: Does it also reflect the ultrarelativistic character of the charge carriers? To what extent is it different from the fractional quantum Hall effect in nonrelativistic semiconductor heterostructures? Many of these questions remain open from an experimental point of view, although some fractional states have recently been observed in the two and fourterminal configuration.
This talk aims at a theoretical perspective on the fractional quantum Hall effect in graphene, namely in view of its multicomponent character due to the fourfold spinvalley degeneracy, which is approximately respected by the underlying electronelectron interactions. This theoretical perspective will be confronted with recent experimental advances.
In particular, we show some partial results related to the weak MarkusYamabe conjecture, which states that if a vector field X: We will give special attention to the planar maps. This relation extends the puritybounded uncertainty re lation for mixed states derived by V. For the special case of pure states it provides us with an extended version of the RobertsonSchrödinger uncertainty relation, saturated by a set of states which includes all the eigenstates of the quantum harmonic oscillator.
We represent our results as a bound in a threedimensional parametric space of mixed states and identify the regions of the bound realized by states with non negative Wigner function. Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics Informal seminar: Polterovich study the isometries of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms with respect to the Hofer metric. They prove this conjecture in the case when the symplectic manifold is a product of closed surfaces of positive genus.
In this talk we give an outline of a new class of manifolds for which bounded isometry conjecture holds. In this talk, I will focus on the family of diagrammatic Monte Carlo DiagMC methods introduced recently to meet this challenge. A new generation of DiagMC methods based on sampling irreducible Feynman diagrams directly in the thermodynamic limit features an unprecedented tolerance to the notorious fermionic sign problem, which makes it a promising technique for unbiased solution of generic manybody fermionic systems.
I will substantiate this promise with accurate results for the repulsive Hubbard model in the correlated Fermi liquid regime and a very recent calculation of the equation of state of the unitary Fermi gas. Recently, several types of experiment have probed the consequences of this nonequilibrium distribution, first in interferometers, and recently by a direct measurement of the distribution and its evolution with distance downstream from the quantum point contact [1].
In this talk I will describe theoretical work [2] aimed at understanding aspects of these experiments. The morphology and stability of a nanostructure depend crucially on the environmental conditions of fabrication and operation.
It is therefore fundamental for energy applications to understand in detail how the environment influences these properties. In this talk, I will discuss atomistic simulations based on density functional theory aimed at investigating the formation and stability of nanostructures of oxides of platinumgroup metals and of lithium in an oxygenrich environment.
These systems are relevant for fuel cells and lithiumair batteries, respectively. I will show that the thermodynamics of oxides is different when the nanoscopic size is taken into account and that this has consequences for their functionality. I will thoroughly compare the calculations with experimental results on oxidation state, morphology and functional behavior of nanostructures, and I will discuss open questions and future developments.
With respect to the NRG then, complete yet fully tractable manybody basis sets allow for textbook evaluations of physical properties of quantum impurity models such as dynamic correlation functions or quantum quenches. This, for example, also provides a direct link to optical absorption spectra, and provides a framework for a clean numerical treatment of Anderson orthogonality exponents in the thermodynamic limit. More generally, challenges in numerical complexity will be addressed, highlighting a recent algorithmic advance in terms of the generic implementation of nonabelian symmetries within tensor networks.
Quantum Modular Forms Address: Here, I want to focus on some selected pressureinduced effects in crystalline systems, in particular on how the natural effect of promoting more symmetric structure upon compressing the lattice can be worked out into a tuning of local and extended lattice distortions arising from chargelattice coupling.
This is the exemplary case of the spontaneous symmetry breaking occurring in JahnTeller and Peierls systems. The physics of these correlated materials is quite complex and typically characterized by a delicate interplay among different interactions at the same energy scale.
Applying pressure, over even a relatively small range GPa , causes these systems to reach new, and sometimes unconventional, states but it also enables to disentangle the effects of the different coupling mechanisms thus gaining a deeper knowledge of the ambient conditions phases. Recent high pressure experiments range GPa on several Vanadium oxides with special focusing to the case of VO2 Peierls system is also discussed. We will see that, apart from the characterization of the new higher density phases, the high pressure studies provide key information on the physics of these systems at ambient pressure which stimulates their theoretical modeling.
The insulator to metal transition and the onset of phase separated states" Address: We find that the conductance as a function of magnetic flux shows a series of interactioninduced resonances that survive thermal averaging.
The period of the series is given by the interaction strength alpha. The physics behind this behavior is the blocking of the tunneling current by the circular current. The main mechanism of dephasing is due to circularcurrent fluctuations. The dephasing rate is proportional to the tunneling rate and does not depend on alpha. Petersburg Seminar Start Time: After a brief review of cosmological nonGaussianity and holography, we discuss the construction of holographic models for the inflationary epoch.
We show how cosmological observables, such as the primordial power spectrum and nonGaussianities, may be computed from the correlation functions of a dual threedimensional nongravitational QFT.
We present a general class of holographic models that are consistent with current observational constraints and discuss the distinctive signatures they predict for the running of the spectral index and for the form of primordial nonGaussianity. Marco Zennaro e Carlo Fonda Secretary: The main novelty of the approach is that it allows to treat generic intrachain repulsive interactions of arbitrary strength.
The chains are coupled by a direct tunneling and fourfermion interactions. A judicious choice of the basis for the decoupled chains greatly simplifies the description and allows one to separate high and low energy degrees of freedom. In a direct analogy to the bulk cuprates the resulting effective field theory distinguishes between three qualitatively different regimes: I discuss the excitation spectrum and derive expressions for the electron spectral function which turns out to be highly incoherent.
The degree of incoherence increases when one considers an array of ladders stripe phase. In this talk I will discuss in particular a class of regulatory motifs known as "mixed feed forward loops mFFLs ". These motifs seem to be under positive selection in the human regulatory network, thus suggesting that they should play some important functional role. Moreover, in human, several of the genes involved in these mFFLs are known to be oncogenes i.
Our proposal is that these mFFLs are used by the cell to keep under control the stochastic fluctuations in the amount of proteins expressed by the target genes and that for this reason their disregulation plays such an important role in cancer progression.
The talk will be divided in two parts. The first will be devoted to a short pedagogical introduction to the organization of Eukaryotic genomes and to the mechanisms of gene regulation. Then in the second part I will discuss, using both stochastic equations and bioinformatic tools the role played by mFFLs in the regulatory network. There is also a close connection between these skew products and partially hyperbolic dynamical systems on smooth manifolds. Even for the fiber dimension equal to one, we are far from understanding what "typical" skew products look like.
During the last 30 years there appeared several papers studying the skew products with a circle fiber. I will talk about the case when the fiber is an interval, and fiber maps are orientationpreserving diffeomorphisms. In the work joint with V. For generic skew products, we obtained a similar result using an additional assumption of partialhyperbolic nature. High Energy Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics , Cosmology The influence of primordial nonGaussianity on largescale structures new hopes for falsifying inflation Address: Special sessions will be devoted to the Africa domain and to the assessment of the first multimodel CORDEX simulations over this region.
This first segment of the conference will include invited and contributed papers and will entail a strong communication between the climate modeling and impact communities. The second segment March will include targeted skill building training sessions along with a specific Africa regional analysis design activity.
This second segment will be mostly composed of theoretical lectures and handon laboratory sessions. Design, Efficiency and Statistical Regularities smr Room: Marsili Local Organiser Secretary: Its qualitative behavior is quite well understood: Using the example of two integrable models, we argue that close to nonconformal points the entropy shows a peculiar singular behavior, characteristic of an essential singularity.
At these nonconformal points the model undergoes a discontinuous transition, with a level crossing in the ground state and a quadratic excitation spectrum.
We propose the entropy as an efficient tool to determine the discontinuous or continuous nature of a phase transition also in more complicated models. An important issue of the theory of critical phenomena is how critical behaviors develop in inhomogenous systems. Physically interesting systems are interacting particles confined within a limited region of space by an external potential. Recent experiments of BoseEinstein condensation in diluted atomic vapors and of cold atoms in optical lattices are set up with a harmonic trap.
Therefore, a theoretical description of how criticality develops in the presence of the confining enternal field is of great importance for these experiments. I present a trapsize scaling theory for confined particle systems at thermal and quantum transitions, providing a framework to describe the critical behaviors of confined particle systems.
Some applications to physically interesting models are discussed. Especially, duality method, BeurlingCarlemanDomar resolvent method and Korenblum's method are considered. Mathematics Closed invariant subspaces in some Banach spaces of analytic functions. The activity is intended for theoretical physicists or mathematicians with knowledge of quantum field theory, general relativity and string theory. Silverstein Stanford University Laboratories: The neutrinos are taken to be with only standardmodel couplings.
The medium fulfills the dual purpose of inducing an effective neutrinophoton vertex and of modifying the photon dispersion relation. We ignore the neutrino masses in the calculations due to their negligible contribution. The violation of the translational invariance at the direction from one media into another leads to the momentum non conservation at the same direction.
We find that the probability of transition radiation is larger by three orders of magnitude using the medium induced neutrinophoton vertex than previous calculations using vacuum induced vertex. After the quench their spatial distribution changes and, typically, their density decreases. The mechanisms whereby this occurs depend on the microscopic dynamics.
The characterization of the density of topological defects has also been of interest in cosmology and the standard description in this context is given by the socalled KibbleZurek mechanism.
We have critically revisited this theory in two characteristic cases: In this talk I shall explain our vision of this problem. E 81, This effect is caused by the nonintegrable shortdistance singularity of the electronmediated RKKY exchange between the localized spins resulting in the failure of the standard meanfield theory. A modification of the mean field theory resolving this problem is proposed and then applied to the experimentally interesting systems such as magnetic atoms on graphene and on the surfaces of topological insulators.
This implies that correlations must be long ranged in some sense already before averaging, that is they must be long ranged with finite probability also in individual samples. The motivation for the study of correlations in individual samples of the paradigmatic case of spin glasses comes from the consideration that long range correlations seem to be a common feature of several complex systems, and in some of the real life complex systems not only the averaged behaviour, but also the individual samples are important.
Numerical simulations in the mean field model [1] have already showed that the distribution of the simplest spinspin correlations is very broad at low temperatures. We performed similar studies on low dimensional 2d,3d spin glass samples and found broad correlation distributions again.
In 2d there is no equilibrium spin glass phase, but at low temperatures we found extremely longlived quasistable patterns that allowed us to measure the correlations. The dependence of the correlations on distance in Euclidean lattices is random, with anomalously large absolute values showing up with finite probability even for large distances.
The correlations extremely sensitively depend on the realization of the random couplings and on the boundary conditions, but any averaging over the randomness, or over some spherical regions around a reference site washes away all this structure.
The talk will conclude with some speculations concerning the possible relevance of these findings to real life complex systems, such as traffic, electric power, or financial networks. Large random correlations in individual mean field spin glass samples, J.
We shall discuss a simple downtoearth model of quantum stochastic process, quantum analogue of the Brownian motion, whose definition is inspired by geometrical considerations but also by speculative dissipative phenomena in the quantum Hall effect. A case study" Speaker s: We introduce the concept of Stanley decompositions in the localized polynomial ring Sf where f is a product of variables, and we show that the Stanley depth does not decrease upon localization.
For the proof of this result we introduce Hilbert series for multigraded Kvector spaces. Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics Stanley decompositions in localized polynomial rings Address: We find a relation between the inverse participation ratio, the EdwardsAnderson order parameter and the average Hamming distance between spin configurations covered by a typical eigenstate for which we conjecture a remarkably simple form for the thermodynamic limit. We find a sudden onset of an exponentially large IPR on the space of spin configurations, although local observables singlespin expectation values never achieve thermalization.
We also studied the random process defined by the spread of a typical eigenstate on configuration space, highlighting several similarities with hopping on percolated hypercube, a process used to mimic the slow relaxation of spin glasses.
International School on Nuclear Security smr Room: Through different examples ranging from second order phase transitions to quantum field theory on curved space, we review the formalism and some techniques developed to solve the exact renormalization group flow equation. The electronelectron interaction in the particlehole and Cooper channels is taken into account and assumed to be shortrange.
Twodimensional systems in the weak localization and antilocalization regime, as well as systems near the mobility edge are considered. We show that in all these regimes Anderson localization leads to a strong enhancement of Tc, which is related to the multifractal character of wavefunctions.
Casting it in terms of a perfect fluid, it behaves hydrodynamically like "dust" in the sense that it's soundspeed is identically zero. Unlike regular dust like Cold Dark Matter for example however, this fluid possess a nonvanishing pressure.
If I have time, I will discuss issues with trying to construct a quantum field theory of Angel Dust. Designer Dust with Pressure Address: We focus here on the statistical properties of inferred models and argue that inference procedures are likely to yield models which are close to a phase transition.
On one side, we show that the reparameterization invariant metrics in the space of probability distributions of these models the Fisher Information is directly related to the model's susceptibility.
As a result, distinguishable models tend to accumulate close to critical points, where the susceptibility diverges in infinite systems. On the other, this region is the one where the estimate of inferred parameters is most stable. In order to illustrate these points, we discuss inference of interacting point processes with application to financial data and show that sensible choices of observation timescales naturally yield models which are close to criticality.
I will describe work in progress with Georg Gottwald indicating that when analysed in the context of systems with Euclidean E n symmetry, typically the anomalous diffusion persists if and only if n is odd. In even dimensions, the anomalous diffusion is typically suppressed and replaced by Brownian motion. They are characterized by topological invariants. At the same time, the same procedure explains why topological insulators, once the interactions are turned on, can lose their boundary states.
Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics Seminar on Disorder and strong electron correlations "Bulkboundary correspondence of topological insulators" Address: Meeting of Modern Science and School Physics: I present exact analytical results for the asymptotic time and distance dependence of one and twopoint correlation functions of the order parameter. These results are based on two complementary approaches based on asymptotic evaluations of determinants and formfactor sums.
I show that the stationary value of the twopoint correlation function is not thermal, but can be described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble GGE. The approach to the stationary state can also be understood in terms of a GGE. Generalizations to particular quenches in other integrable models are discussed. This object is of some prominence in linear controltheory circles because the PickNevanlinna interpolation problem on it is very challenging. A first step in solving this problem would be to solve the 2point problem, i.
We shall discuss how this feature points to the prospect of a sharp Schwarz lemma. Mathematics Towards a sharp Schwarz Lemma for the spectral unit ball Address: A polariton gas is a model system of a dissipative, ultralight Bose gas in a solid state environment, which provides an easy and complete experimental access to the system observables. Thus, fascinating phenomena like polariton lasing [1], BoseEinstein condensation [2] and more recently superfluidity [3] could be demonstrated and studied with a great wealth of details.
Recently, owing to advances in the domain of semiconductor nanostructure fabrication, new interesting perspectives have emerged: In this presentation, the most recent experimental observations on polariton gases will be reviewed, and the future possible experimental realization with polariton condensates will be discussed. An ultralight dissipative Bose gas with tunable dimensionality" Address: Ramakrishnan Local Organiser Secretary: Lozano Local Organizers Secretary: Theoretical understanding of transport in clean and disordered spin chains will be reviewed in the talk.
In particular, the interplay of electron correlations and random static disorder will be analysed with respect to possible manybody Anderson localization. What is needed is a superconductor to hide the charge difference, and a topological phase to eliminate the zeropoint motion that would cause an energy difference.
A qubit encoded in a pair of Majorana fermions is expected to have an unusually long decoherence time. We will discuss strategies to detect Majorana fermions in a topological superconductor, as well as possible applications in a quantum computer. We will concentrate on a very special case, of a function u taking three vectors at the vertices of an equilateral triangle and jumping on a triple junction with angles at degrees.
This problem, related to a question posed by De Giorgi several years ago, is strictly related to minimal surfaces with codimension two. Both types of devices are based on a the ability of phasechange materials to undergo reversible and fast transitions between the amorphous and crystalline phases upon heating by a laser or current pulse and b the strong optical and electronic contrast between the two phases.
In spite of their enormous technological importance, the structural and electronic properties of these materials and the mechanisms driving the transitions are still controversial. In the first part of my talk I will present our computational study of the Raman spectrum of two prototypical phasechange materials: The spectrum of amorphous GeTe and cubic and amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 were obtained by ab initio simulations and empirical bond polarizability models.
The models of the amorphous phases of these systems were generated by quenching from the melt within ab initio molecular dynamics. The calculated spectra are in good agreement with experimental data and provide strong evidence of the existence of the peculiar local structures of the amorphous phase revealed by recent firstprinciples simulations, namely tetrahedral Ge and defective octahedral sites for a fraction of Ge and for all Sb and Te atoms.
In the second part of my talk I will present some preliminary results on two ongoing projects: This leads to some divisibility results for Chern numbers. The lectures will include the basic principles of evapotranspiration and crop water use.
Methods of calculating and measuring evapotranspiration and its partitioning into soil evaporation and crop transpiration, the two major sources of water losses from agricultural systems, will be presented.
A quantitative framework for improving water use efficiency from field to areawide scale will be discussed. However, while quantum phenomena like the emission of thermal radiation from black holes are hardly detectable, analogue systems can provide the unique possibility to experimentally test such effects. Originally driven by such motivation, the study of analogies between quantum field theory in curved space and condensed matter has now produced a fruitful interchange leading to new and deep insights in both fields.
In particular BoseEinstein Condesates are a very rich and powerful system in which this analogy can be implemented. I will give an overview on how various issues in the context of general relativity can be addressed through the analogy with BEC. Vice versa, techniques imported from general relativity can proficiently describe interesting phenomena in BEC, such as spontaneous phonon emission in flows crossing the speed of sound and resonant effects in system with multiple sonic points.
However, whether this atlas covers the full universe of all possible protein structures is still a highly debated issue. By using a sophisticated numerical approach, bias exchange metadynamics, we performed an exhaustive exploration of the conformational space of a 60 amino acid polypeptide chain described with an accurate allatom interaction potential.
This ensemble plausibly represents the universe of protein folds of similar length; indeed, all the known folds are represented in the set with good accuracy, despite of the fact the simulation is performed for a homopeptide. However, we discover that the known folds form a rather small subset, which cannot be reproduced by choosing random structures in the database.
Rather, natural and possible folds differ by the contact order, on average significantly smaller in the former. This suggests the presence of an evolutionary bias, possibly related to kinetic accessibility, towards structures with shorter loops between contacting residues. In a first part I will discuss the role of interaction in graphene and manifestations of interactions in transport measurements in weakly interacting systems.
For strong interactions for a concrete phenomenological model we will also discuss the quantum critical conductivity of graphene at a semimetaltoinsulator transition breaking the chiral symmetry and make connection to experiments conducted on suspended graphene samples.
In a second part we discuss topological insulators and specifically the Dirac character of surface states. We argue that upon driving a bulk quantum phase transition surface states can be tuned in a way which might facilitate the observation of chiral symmetry breaking on the surface. Most, if not all of these remote domains are beyond our cosmic horizon and cannot be directly observed.
I will discuss the origin of the new worldview, the conceptual problems that it raised, and its possible observational tests. The principle of mediocrity Address: The specific objectives will be to: Train participant in installing and managing computational data servers.

They demonstrated to be an efficient way to share and access resources of different types, which can effectively enhance the potential of scientific research and productivity. This international conference will address the role of einfrastructures toward a better understanding of climate change from the global to the regional scales.
The main goal of this event is to expose the participating scientists and stakeholders to modern einfrastructures which includes an HPC and Grid environments so that the potential provided by this infrastructure for climate change research can be assessed. AGH Infolab first 3 days Secretary: We plan to present the results in the cases of diffeomorphisms, critical circle maps, and maps with breaks. The relation between hyperbolicity of renormalizations and rigidity theory will be also explained.
Its realization in nanostructures has potential applications for quantum information processing. In this talk I discuss the backaction of measurement on electrons undergoing CTAP in a triple quantum dot system. Continuous measurement is accounted for using Korotkov's Bayesian quantum mechanics, which allows to study single realizations of the protocol while keeping track of the detector output.
One observes a trade off between information gain by the measurement vs. Mechanical and Thermal Processes in Geodynamics smr Room: It is worth noticing that the KreinRutman theorem as well as its linear or nonlinear variants extend the wellknown PerronFrobenius theorem and is a fundamental tool in the study of positive eigenvalue problems with invaluable applications in Mathematical Analysis e.
Mathematics Positivity and principal eigenvalue problems with applications Address: Yet, mantle lithosphere must also shorten horizontally, and if it thickens, it should provide a weight that maintains the range at a lower elevation than it would be if isostatic compensation resulted only from thickened crust. Being cold and dense, mantle lithosphere or at least its lower part should be convectively unstable, and hence should sink rapidly into the underying asthenosphere as downwelling sheets or plumes.
Indeed, tomographic images of mountain ranges do not, in general, reveal a deep root of thickened mantle lithosphere, suggesting that some process removed it. I exploit seismological images of upper mantle structure, numerical experiments of RayleighTaylor instability arising when a dense layer overlies a less dense one , and inferences of paleoaltimetry, among other geologic observations to argue that mantle lithosphere commonly is removed when mountain ranges are built, with unexpected consequences in some cases.
I will use geological and geophysical data from Tibet, the Andes, the Tien Shan, etc. Anyhow, if all of this interpretation proves to be nonsense, I hope to present interesting facts and well executed numerical experiments that others will find useful. Mantle dynamics and the rise and fall of mountain belts Address: Mathematics Balanced metrics on Kahler manifolds Address: The analysis of individual CLEW components and their related services is routinely undertaken using modelling tools.
However these models often lack the functionality required to conduct the integrated analysis required in developing climateimpact, land, energy and wateruse related policies. The development of an integrated tool linking the above components would help policy makers assess different technologies, estimate the impact of different development scenarios, coordinate policy and planning activities related to water, energy, land and climate and analyse and evaluate policies.
This point is called phase singular point and the research field, which deals with the beam character around this point, is named singular optics. Different types of singularities have been studied in the literature. In recent years, a special type of singularity named optical vortex received particular attention. A beam having such a singularity at its axis carries a welldefined value of the orbital angular momentum.
The main aim of the workshop is application of the optical vortex in the different physics research fields such as: A CalabiYau manifold is a compact Kahler manifold with vanishing first Chern class. We will address the problem of understanding how these Ricciflat metrics can degenerate, when the complex structure is fixed. Mathematics "How do CalabiYau manifolds degenerate?
Yau's solution of the Calabi Conjecture implies that CalabiYau manifolds admit Ricciflat Kahler metrics, which in most cases are not explicit.
We will address the problem of understanding how these Ricciflat metrics can degenerate, when the complex structure is fixed. Mathematics "How do CalabiYau manifolds degenerate? We describe moduli spaces of semistable vector bundles on nonKaehler elliptic complex surfaces and on nonKaehler principal elliptic bundles, which are CalabiYau type 3folds.

More importantly, the actual three phase coexistence line of CO2 hydrate may be higher than the value ever measured. It was found that the contact angle increases with pressure for hydrophobic siloxane surface while almost constant for the hydrophilic silanol surface, which is in excellent agreement with experimental observations.
The difference results from the different interactions between the CO2 thin film and silica surfaces. It was found that the quartz surface is not saturated as ideal geminal [Si OH 2] surface for all calculations. Since then, superconductivity of simple metals, such as Al, Sn, and Hg, was explained by the BCS theory more than 50 years ago. The BCS theory has several key features: During recent 30 years, several new superconductors have been discovered: These systems are much different from BCS superconductors in: In this talk, I will demonstrate striking commonalities of these new unconventional superconductors by showing accumulated experimental results on energy scales and phase diagrams from muon spin relaxation MuSR , neutron scattering, specific heat, and other measurements, and discuss their implications on pairing and condensation mechanisms.

This talk will explore one way that symmetry can be used in Network Science. It will consider Boolean networks, which are simple models of genetic regulatory systems, as well as of a variety of physical, social, and economic systems. They consist of a directed graph with nodes that have binary output states that are heterogeneous functions of the binary input they receive.
In general there is a symmetry associated with the dynamics Boolean networks, and different dynamics are characterized by different symmetries. Furthermore, if the networks are evolving then they reflect the symmetry of their evolutionary dynamics. Computer simulations, analytic statistical mechanics, and group theoretic methods will be used to identify the symmetry and to use the results to distinguish various network dynamics.
Important symmetry groups will be identified. These groups include the canalization preserving group. Canalization is a form of network robustness that is important for developmental biological systems. Various lineshapes of nonlinear conductance observed in a quantum point contact, scanning tunneling microscopy on a magnetic atom adsorbed on a metallic substrate, and a singleelectron transistor with a quantum dot, which are not fully understood yet, can be explained by the quasiparticle tunneling through the abovementioned tunneling levels. A possible roadmap to solve the problem is via extending key concepts of information theory to networks. In this talk we discuss recent works defining the Shannon entropy of a network ensemble and evaluating how it relates to the Gibbs and von Neumann entropies of network ensembles.
The quantities we introduce here play a crucial role for the formulation of null models of networks through maximumentropy arguments and contribute to inference problems emerging in the field of complex networks. The School will concentrate on both fundamental theories of the circulations, as well as on understanding and using the wealth of modern observational and reanalysis data sets of the atmosphere and oceans.
The Conference will highlight current research questions on the mean and variability of the general circulation. Recent efforts at reanalysis of the atmosphere and oceans at a number of institutions around the world has allowed for the incorporation of both historical and modern observational data sets into the predictive framework of stateoftheart numerical models. The multiplicity of these efforts can be used to better understand what is known firmly about the variability of the climate system on time scales from hourly to centennial and what is still unknown.
This will be the focus of the Conference. Research topics and questions of interest may include: They will have a unique opportunity to access multiple large reanalysis data sets, and to learn how the global circulation interacts with regional climate and weather of local practical concern.

Bayarmagnai Gombodorj Support EMail: Applied Physics Computational Neuroanatomy: Lights and Shadows Address: An indirect indication of how DNA is packaged is provided by the detected spectrum of knots formed by DNA that is circularised inside the P4 viral capsid [3, 4].
The experimental results on the knot spectrum of the P4 DNA are here compared to results of coarsegrained simulation of DNA knotting in confined volumes. We start by considering a standard coarsegrained model for DNA which is known to be capable of reproducing the salient physical aspects of free, unconstrained DNA [5].
Specifically the model accounts for DNA bending rigidity and excluded volume interactions. By subjecting the model DNA molecules to spatial confinement it is found that confinement favours chiral knots over achiral ones, in agreement with P4 experiments.
However, no significant bias of torus over twist knots is found, contrary to what found in P4 experiments [6, 7]. A good agreement with experiment is found, instead, upon introducing an additional interaction potential that accounts for tendency of contacting DNA portions to order as in cholesteric liquid crystals. Accounting for this local potential allows us to reproduce the main experimental data on DNA organisation in phages, including the cryoEM observations and detailed features of the spectrum of DNA knots formed inside viral capsids.
The DNA knots we observe are strongly delocalized and, intriguingly, this is shown not to interfere with genome ejection out of the phage [8]. If time allows I will report on recent characterizations of evolutionary aspects that have arguably lead to the appearance of knots in naturallyoccurring proteins[9].
A computational approach" Address: Some patterns clouds, zebra stripes form in space, while others the ebb and flow of tides, cardiac rhythms form in time. Although there is no general theory of pattern formation in systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium, new analysis techniques enable quantitative comparisons of patterns such as the spirals in a frog egg, a fibrillating heart, and an ocean eddy. Insight into pattern formation in diverse systems of different sizes and different underlying mechanisms can be gained from a common approach, as will be illustrated with examples from chemistry, physics, and biology.
Emergence of order in physical, chemical, and biological systems Address: Using these techniques, a proposed model for RNA unwinding is validated and interpreted at atomistic resolution. From small proteins to RNAs" Address: On the molecular level, the relatively small concentrations of the relevant molecules and the intrinsic randomness of chemical reactions provide sources of noise that set physical limits on this information transmission.
Given these limits, not all networks perform equally well, and maximizing information transmission provides a optimization principle from which we might hope to derive the properties of real regulatory networks.
Inspired by the precision of transmission of positional information in the early development of the fly embryo, I will discuss the properties of specific small networks that can transmit the maximum information. I will show how the molecular details of regulation change the networks ability to transmit information.
At the same time, we work on the prediction of interactomes of amyloid fibrils in the cellular context and develop models for calculating the interaction potential with molecular chaperones.

When noncoding is functional and coding is not" Address: These are the basis for the symplectic side of Kontsevich's Homological Mirror Symmetry conjecture relating the algebraic geometry and symplectic geometry of mirror pairs of CalabiYau manifolds.
The constructions are defined by counts of pseudoholomorphic curves in a symplectic manifold, with Lagrangian submanifolds as boundary conditions. The recent pseudoholomorphic quilt theory of Wehrheim and Woodward incorporates Lagrangian correspondences as additional boundary conditions, so that pseudoholomorphic quilts transition between pseudoholomorphic curves in one symplectic manifold to pseudoholomorphic curves in another.
I will explain how this leads to constructions of Ainfinity bimodules associated to Lagrangian correspondences, and an enhancement to Ainfinity functors. These may be viewed as symplectic analogues of FourierMukai transforms in algebraic geometry.
Joint work with Wehrheim and Woodward. Mathematics Lagrangian correspondences in symplectic topology Address: Thanks to their molecule receptors, cells are able to sense concentration gradients with high accuracy. For example, small motile bacteria such as E.
The noise arising from the small number of detected molecules sets a fundamental physical limit on the accuracy of concentration sensing, as originally shown in the seminal work of Berg and Purcell, but up to now no theory existed for the physical limit of ramp sensing, which is what bacteria actually do.
I will show how such a bound can be derived for different measurement devices, from a single receptor to an entire cell. I will then present a plausible implementation of that bound by a realistic bio chemical network, similar to the adaptation system of E.
Finally I will show how energy consumption at the level of the receptors can be used to increase the accuracy by a twofold factor over a passive scheme where no energy is consumed. Magnetars are maximum stars. They carry the highest magnetic fields and emit the most energetic flares recorded.
They have many other distinctive and puzzling features that defy explanation. We consider a model where the strong magnetic fields of magnetars arise from a high baryon density, magnetized core. In this framework magnetars are distinguished from pulsars by their higher masses and central density.
For magnetars, as core densities exceed a threshold, the strong interaction induces a phase transition to a neutral pion condensate that aligns all magnetic moments. The core magnetic field is initially shielded by the ambient high conductivity plasma. With time the shielding currents dissipate transporting the core field out, first to the crust and then breaking through the crust to the surface of the star. Recent observations provide strong support for this model which accounts for several properties of magnetars and also and also enables us to identify new magnetars.

As a consequence the molecular structure of water and ice is directly affected by quantum mechanics. Yet the effect is essentially quasiharmonic and quasiclassical in nature. The electrical activity of this incredibly complex network of neurons makes up human thought, and allows us to move, perceive, talk, plan, love, and do physics, all with a subtlety and precision that escapes the most powerful computers.
And to do all this the brain uses only as much power as a refrigerator light bulb! I will discuss the strategies employed by neural circuits e. Using the example of the circuits in the retina, I will argue that efficiency of computation can give a "theory of design" explaining key aspects of the observed architecture. Finally I will argue that there is a law of diminishing returns on these strategies.
This law affects our ability to get "smarter" by evolving to have bigger brains more neurons , using more energy more active neurons , having more cleverly organized circuits, or even attaching plugin external modules that could help the brain to do difficult things like multiplication.
