We study two different regimes. First, the interactions between the particles are tuned to zero. Infact, despite it is present in many different physical systems such as, for example, helium in porous media [6] and high TC superconductors [7], its complete understanding is still missing. We also study the diffusion of the coherent matter wave through the disordered lattice [8]. In case of the non interacting system, diffusion is absent, since the condensate wavefunction is fully localized. When repulsive interactions are added, we instead observe a slow expansion with subdiffusive behavior.

Our investigations allow to get an insight on the interdisciplinary field of diffusion in disordered potentials in presence of non-linearity. In this talk we review some recent quantum Monte Carlo studies of Fermi gases with resonant inter-particle interactions. We discuss the properties of the superfluid phase and of the exotic normal phase which can be stabilized at zero temperature by imposing an imbalance between the spin components.

For bosonic systems in optical lattices, we investigate the superfluid to insulator transition by using a novel continuous-space quantum Monte Carlo technique.

We address the regimes of strong inter-particle interactions and weak or intermediate optical potentials, thus extending previous theoretical studies based on discrete lattice models. In one dimension interactions usually lead to a radically new type of physics, very different from the one we know for higher dimensional systems.

I will present the main concepts underlying this physics, known as Luttinger liquids, and show the various realizations of such systems that recent progress in material science, nanotechnology and cold atomic physics have provided. I will discuss where the field is standing now, and what are today's challenges, such as going beyond the Luttinger liquid concept.

Magnetic field and temperature allow an excellent control on the density of excitations and various very efficient probes such as neutrons and NMR are available. They can thus be used as "quantum simulators'' to tackle with great success questions that one would normally search in itinerant interacting quantum systems. In particular they have provided excellent realizations of Bose-Einstein condensates. This allowed not only to probe the properties of interacting bosons in a variety of dimensions but also to study in a controlled way additional effects such as disorder.

If the dimensionality is reduced they also allow to test in a quantitative way Luttinger liquid physics. I will discuss these various cases, and show that we have now good theoretical tools to make quantitative comparisons with the experiments. The density of defects after the sweep can be conveniently described by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. In particular, the number of kinks in the zigzag ordering can be derived from a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation for the order parameter, here the zigzag transverse size, under the assumption that the ions are continuously laser cooled.

In a linear Paul trap the transition becomes inhomogeneous, the charge density being larger in the center and more rarefied at the edges. During the linear quench the mechanical instability is first crossed in the center of the chain, and a front, at which the mechanical instability is crossed during the quench, is identified which propagates along the chain from the center to the edges.

If the velocity of this front is smaller than the sound velocity, the dynamics becomes adiabatic even in the thermodynamic limit and no defect is produced. Otherwise, the nucleation of kinks is reduced with respect to the case in which the charges are homogeneously distributed, leading to a new scaling of the density of kinks with the quenching rate.

The analytical predictions are verified numerically by integrating the Langevin equations of motion of the ions, in presence of a time-dependent transverse confinement. We argue that the non-equilibrium dynamics of an ion chain in a Paul trap constitutes an ideal scenario to test the inhomogeneous extension of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, which lacks experimental evidence to date.

We describe the problem and some recent advances in the field that make use of both topological and dynamical aspects to reconstruct the intracellular free energy landscape, and hopefully improve the predictive ability of existing schemes. A natural question arises from this discovery: Does it also reflect the ultra-relativistic character of the charge carriers? To what extent is it different from the fractional quantum Hall effect in non-relativistic semiconductor heterostructures? Many of these questions remain open from an experimental point of view, although some fractional states have recently been observed in the two- and four-terminal configuration.

This talk aims at a theoretical perspective on the fractional quantum Hall effect in graphene, namely in view of its multi-component character due to the fourfold spin-valley degeneracy, which is approximately respected by the underlying electron-electron interactions. This theoretical perspective will be confronted with recent experimental advances.

In particular, we show some partial results related to the weak Markus-Yamabe conjecture, which states that if a vector field X: We will give special attention to the planar maps. This relation extends the purity-bounded uncertainty re lation for mixed states derived by V. For the special case of pure states it provides us with an extended version of the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty relation, saturated by a set of states which includes all the eigenstates of the quantum harmonic oscillator.

We represent our results as a bound in a three-dimensional parametric space of mixed states and identify the regions of the bound realized by states with non- negative Wigner function. In this talk we give an outline of a new class of manifolds for which bounded isometry conjecture holds. In this talk, I will focus on the family of diagrammatic Monte Carlo DiagMC methods introduced recently to meet this challenge. A new generation of DiagMC methods based on sampling irreducible Feynman diagrams directly in the thermodynamic limit features an unprecedented tolerance to the notorious fermionic sign problem, which makes it a promising technique for unbiased solution of generic many-body fermionic systems.

I will substantiate this promise with accurate results for the repulsive Hubbard model in the correlated Fermi liquid regime and a very recent calculation of the equation of state of the unitary Fermi gas. Recently, several types of experiment have probed the consequences of this non-equilibrium distribution, first in interferometers, and recently by a direct measurement of the distribution and its evolution with distance downstream from the quantum point contact [1].

In this talk I will describe theoretical work [2] aimed at understanding aspects of these experiments. The morphology and stability of a nanostructure depend crucially on the environmental conditions of fabrication and operation.

It is therefore fundamental for energy applications to understand in detail how the environment influences these properties. In this talk, I will discuss atomistic simulations based on density functional theory aimed at investigating the formation and stability of nanostructures of oxides of platinum-group metals and of lithium in an oxygen-rich environment.

These systems are relevant for fuel cells and lithium-air batteries, respectively. I will show that the thermodynamics of oxides is different when the nanoscopic size is taken into account and that this has consequences for their functionality. I will thoroughly compare the calculations with experimental results on oxidation state, morphology and functional behavior of nanostructures, and I will discuss open questions and future developments.

With respect to the NRG then, complete yet fully tractable many-body basis sets allow for textbook evaluations of physical properties of quantum impurity models such as dynamic correlation functions or quantum quenches. This, for example, also provides a direct link to optical absorption spectra, and provides a framework for a clean numerical treatment of Anderson orthogonality exponents in the thermodynamic limit. More generally, challenges in numerical complexity will be addressed, highlighting a recent algorithmic advance in terms of the generic implementation of non-abelian symmetries within tensor networks.

Quantum Modular Forms Address: Here, I want to focus on some selected pressure-induced effects in crystalline systems, in particular on how the natural effect of promoting more symmetric structure upon compressing the lattice can be worked out into a tuning of local and extended lattice distortions arising from charge-lattice coupling.

This is the exemplary case of the spontaneous symmetry breaking occurring in Jahn-Teller and Peierls systems. The physics of these correlated materials is quite complex and typically characterized by a delicate interplay among different interactions at the same energy scale.

Applying pressure, over even a relatively small range GPa , causes these systems to reach new, and sometimes unconventional, states but it also enables to disentangle the effects of the different coupling mechanisms thus gaining a deeper knowledge of the ambient conditions phases. Recent high pressure experiments range GPa on several Vanadium oxides with special focusing to the case of VO2 Peierls system is also discussed. We will see that, apart from the characterization of the new higher density phases, the high pressure studies provide key information on the physics of these systems at ambient pressure which stimulates their theoretical modeling.

The insulator to metal transition and the onset of phase separated states" Address: We find that the conductance as a function of magnetic flux shows a series of interaction-induced resonances that survive thermal averaging.

The period of the series is given by the interaction strength alpha. The physics behind this behavior is the blocking of the tunneling current by the circular current. The main mechanism of dephasing is due to circular-current fluctuations. The dephasing rate is proportional to the tunneling rate and does not depend on alpha. We show how cosmological observables, such as the primordial power spectrum and non-Gaussianities, may be computed from the correlation functions of a dual three-dimensional non-gravitational QFT.

We present a general class of holographic models that are consistent with current observational constraints and discuss the distinctive signatures they predict for the running of the spectral index and for the form of primordial non-Gaussianity. The chains are coupled by a direct tunneling and four-fermion interactions. A judicious choice of the basis for the decoupled chains greatly simplifies the description and allows one to separate high and low energy degrees of freedom. In a direct analogy to the bulk cuprates the resulting effective field theory distinguishes between three qualitatively different regimes: I discuss the excitation spectrum and derive expressions for the electron spectral function which turns out to be highly incoherent.

The degree of incoherence increases when one considers an array of ladders stripe phase. In this talk I will discuss in particular a class of regulatory motifs known as "mixed feed forward loops mFFLs ". These motifs seem to be under positive selection in the human regulatory network, thus suggesting that they should play some important functional role. Moreover, in human, several of the genes involved in these mFFLs are known to be oncogenes i.

Our proposal is that these mFFLs are used by the cell to keep under control the stochastic fluctuations in the amount of proteins expressed by the target genes and that for this reason their disregulation plays such an important role in cancer progression.

The talk will be divided in two parts. The first will be devoted to a short pedagogical introduction to the organization of Eukaryotic genomes and to the mechanisms of gene regulation. Then in the second part I will discuss, using both stochastic equations and bioinformatic tools the role played by mFFLs in the regulatory network. There is also a close connection between these skew products and partially hyperbolic dynamical systems on smooth manifolds. We propose the entropy as an efficient tool to determine the discontinuous or continuous nature of a phase transition also in more complicated models. An important issue of the theory of critical phenomena is how critical behaviors develop in inhomogenous systems. Physically interesting systems are interacting particles confined within a limited region of space by an external potential. Recent experiments of Bose-Einstein condensation in diluted atomic vapors and of cold atoms in optical lattices are set up with a harmonic trap.

Therefore, a theoretical description of how criticality develops in the presence of the confining enternal field is of great importance for these experiments. I present a trap-size scaling theory for confined particle systems at thermal and quantum transitions, providing a framework to describe the critical behaviors of confined particle systems.

Some applications to physically interesting models are discussed. Especially, duality method, Beurling-Carleman-Domar resolvent method and Korenblum's method are considered. We ignore the neutrino masses in the calculations due to their negligible contribution. We find that the probability of transition radiation is larger by three orders of magnitude using the medium induced neutrino-photon vertex than previous calculations using vacuum induced vertex. After the quench their spatial distribution changes and, typically, their density decreases. The mechanisms whereby this occurs depend on the microscopic dynamics.

The characterization of the density of topological defects has also been of interest in cosmology and the standard description in this context is given by the so-called Kibble-Zurek mechanism.

We have critically revisited this theory in two characteristic cases: In this talk I shall explain our vision of this problem. E 81, This effect is caused by the non-integrable short-distance singularity of the electron-mediated RKKY exchange between the localized spins resulting in the failure of the standard mean-field theory. A modification of the mean field theory resolving this problem is proposed and then applied to the experimentally interesting systems such as magnetic atoms on graphene and on the surfaces of topological insulators.

This implies that correlations must be long ranged in some sense already before averaging, that is they must be long ranged with finite probability also in individual samples. The motivation for the study of correlations in individual samples of the paradigmatic case of spin glasses comes from the consideration that long range correlations seem to be a common feature of several complex systems, and in some of the real life complex systems not only the averaged behaviour, but also the individual samples are important.

Numerical simulations in the mean field model [1] have already showed that the distribution of the simplest spin-spin correlations is very broad at low temperatures. We performed similar studies on low dimensional 2d,3d spin glass samples and found broad correlation distributions again.

In 2d there is no equilibrium spin glass phase, but at low temperatures we found extremely long-lived quasi-stable patterns that allowed us to measure the correlations. The dependence of the correlations on distance in Euclidean lattices is random, with anomalously large absolute values showing up with finite probability even for large distances.

The correlations extremely sensitively depend on the realization of the random couplings and on the boundary conditions, but any averaging over the randomness, or over some spherical regions around a reference site washes away all this structure.

The talk will conclude with some speculations concerning the possible relevance of these findings to real life complex systems, such as traffic, electric power, or financial networks. Large random correlations in individual mean field spin glass samples, J.

We shall discuss a simple down-to-earth model of quantum stochastic process, quantum analogue of the Brownian motion, whose definition is inspired by geometrical considerations but also by speculative dissipative phenomena in the quantum Hall effect. On one side, we show that the reparameterization invariant metrics in the space of probability distributions of these models the Fisher Information is directly related to the model's susceptibility.

As a result, distinguishable models tend to accumulate close to critical points, where the susceptibility diverges in infinite systems. On the other, this region is the one where the estimate of inferred parameters is most stable. In order to illustrate these points, we discuss inference of interacting point processes with application to financial data and show that sensible choices of observation time-scales naturally yield models which are close to criticality.

I will describe work in progress with Georg Gottwald indicating that when analysed in the context of systems with Euclidean E n symmetry, typically the anomalous diffusion persists if and only if n is odd. In even dimensions, the anomalous diffusion is typically suppressed and replaced by Brownian motion. They are characterized by topological invariants. At the same time, the same procedure explains why topological insulators, once the interactions are turned on, can lose their boundary states.

These results are based on two complementary approaches based on asymptotic evaluations of determinants and form-factor sums.

I show that the stationary value of the two-point correlation function is not thermal, but can be described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble GGE. The approach to the stationary state can also be understood in terms of a GGE. Generalizations to particular quenches in other integrable models are discussed. This object is of some prominence in linear control-theory circles because the Pick-Nevanlinna interpolation problem on it is very challenging. What is needed is a superconductor to hide the charge difference, and a topological phase to eliminate the zero-point motion that would cause an energy difference.

A qubit encoded in a pair of Majorana fermions is expected to have an unusually long decoherence time. We will discuss strategies to detect Majorana fermions in a topological superconductor, as well as possible applications in a quantum computer. We will concentrate on a very special case, of a function u taking three vectors at the vertices of an equilateral triangle and jumping on a triple junction with angles at degrees.

This problem, related to a question posed by De Giorgi several years ago, is strictly related to minimal surfaces with codimension two. Both types of devices are based on a the ability of phase-change materials to undergo reversible and fast transitions between the amorphous and crystalline phases upon heating by a laser or current pulse and b the strong optical and electronic contrast between the two phases.

In spite of their enormous technological importance, the structural and electronic properties of these materials and the mechanisms driving the transitions are still controversial. In the first part of my talk I will present our computational study of the Raman spectrum of two prototypical phase-change materials: The spectrum of amorphous GeTe and cubic and amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 were obtained by ab initio simulations and empirical bond polarizability models.

The models of the amorphous phases of these systems were generated by quenching from the melt within ab initio molecular dynamics. The calculated spectra are in good agreement with experimental data and provide strong evidence of the existence of the peculiar local structures of the amorphous phase revealed by recent first-principles simulations, namely tetrahedral Ge and defective octahedral sites for a fraction of Ge and for all Sb and Te atoms.

In the second part of my talk I will present some preliminary results on two ongoing projects: This leads to some divisibility results for Chern numbers. The lectures will include the basic principles of evapotranspiration and crop water use.

Methods of calculating and measuring evapotranspiration and its partitioning into soil evaporation and crop transpiration, the two major sources of water losses from agricultural systems, will be presented.

A quantitative framework for improving water use efficiency from field to area-wide scale will be discussed. However, while quantum phenomena like the emission of thermal radiation from black holes are hardly detectable, analogue systems can provide the unique possibility to experimentally test such effects. Originally driven by such motivation, the study of analogies between quantum field theory in curved space and condensed matter has now produced a fruitful interchange leading to new and deep insights in both fields.

In particular Bose-Einstein Condesates are a very rich and powerful system in which this analogy can be implemented. I will give an overview on how various issues in the context of general relativity can be addressed through the analogy with BEC. Vice versa, techniques imported from general relativity can proficiently describe interesting phenomena in BEC, such as spontaneous phonon emission in flows crossing the speed of sound and resonant effects in system with multiple sonic points.

However, whether this atlas covers the full universe of all possible protein structures is still a highly debated issue. By using a sophisticated numerical approach, bias exchange metadynamics, we performed an exhaustive exploration of the conformational space of a 60 amino acid polypeptide chain described with an accurate all-atom interaction potential.

This ensemble plausibly represents the universe of protein folds of similar length; indeed, all the known folds are represented in the set with good accuracy, despite of the fact the simulation is performed for a homopeptide. However, we discover that the known folds form a rather small subset, which cannot be reproduced by choosing random structures in the database.

Rather, natural and possible folds differ by the contact order, on average significantly smaller in the former. This suggests the presence of an evolutionary bias, possibly related to kinetic accessibility, towards structures with shorter loops between contacting residues. In a first part I will discuss the role of interaction in graphene and manifestations of interactions in transport measurements in weakly interacting systems.

For strong interactions for a concrete phenomenological model we will also discuss the quantum critical conductivity of graphene at a semimetal-to-insulator transition breaking the chiral symmetry and make connection to experiments conducted on suspended graphene samples.

In a second part we discuss topological insulators and specifically the Dirac character of surface states. We argue that upon driving a bulk quantum phase transition surface states can be tuned in a way which might facilitate the observation of chiral symmetry breaking on the surface. Most, if not all of these remote domains are beyond our cosmic horizon and cannot be directly observed.

Indeed, tomographic images of mountain ranges do not, in general, reveal a deep root of thickened mantle lithosphere, suggesting that some process removed it. I exploit seismological images of upper mantle structure, numerical experiments of Rayleigh-Taylor instability arising when a dense layer overlies a less dense one , and inferences of paleo-altimetry, among other geologic observations to argue that mantle lithosphere commonly is removed when mountain ranges are built, with unexpected consequences in some cases.

I will use geological and geophysical data from Tibet, the Andes, the Tien Shan, etc. Anyhow, if all of this interpretation proves to be nonsense, I hope to present interesting facts and well executed numerical experiments that others will find useful. This talk will explore one way that symmetry can be used in Network Science. It will consider Boolean networks, which are simple models of genetic regulatory systems, as well as of a variety of physical, social, and economic systems. They consist of a directed graph with nodes that have binary output states that are heterogeneous functions of the binary input they receive.

In general there is a symmetry associated with the dynamics Boolean networks, and different dynamics are characterized by different symmetries. Furthermore, if the networks are evolving then they reflect the symmetry of their evolutionary dynamics. Computer simulations, analytic statistical mechanics, and group theoretic methods will be used to identify the symmetry and to use the results to distinguish various network dynamics.

Important symmetry groups will be identified. These groups include the canalization preserving group. Canalization is a form of network robustness that is important for developmental biological systems. Specifically the model accounts for DNA bending rigidity and excluded volume interactions. By subjecting the model DNA molecules to spatial confinement it is found that confinement favours chiral knots over achiral ones, in agreement with P4 experiments.

A good agreement with experiment is found, instead, upon introducing an additional interaction potential that accounts for tendency of contacting DNA portions to order as in cholesteric liquid crystals. Accounting for this local potential allows us to reproduce the main experimental data on DNA organisation in phages, including the cryo-EM observations and detailed features of the spectrum of DNA knots formed inside viral capsids.

The DNA knots we observe are strongly delocalized and, intriguingly, this is shown not to interfere with genome ejection out of the phage [8]. If time allows I will report on recent characterizations of evolutionary aspects that have arguably lead to the appearance of knots in naturally-occurring proteins[9].

For magnetars, as core densities exceed a threshold, the strong interaction induces a phase transition to a neutral pion condensate that aligns all magnetic moments. The core magnetic field is initially shielded by the ambient high conductivity plasma. With time the shielding currents dissipate transporting the core field out, first to the crust and then breaking through the crust to the surface of the star. Recent observations provide strong support for this model which accounts for several properties of magnetars and also and also enables us to identify new magnetars.
